WESTWOOD – Chances are good that most of our readers have driven through this spot, but they might not recognize it from the photo below. This is a northward look up Kinderkamack Road from Jefferson Avenue in Westwood. The photograph dates to the winter of 1915.
On the right side of the photograph below, just visible on the edge of the image, are the stone pillars which still stand in front of Becker Funeral Home.
Just north of those is the house at 231 Kinderkamack Road, which is still easily recognizable by the half-circle window under the peak of its roof. Built in the late 1800s, this house became a restaurant called the Hitching Post in the 1940s (shown at right). Like its neighbor across the street, this place at one time had a hitching post along the curb, hence the name. At the dawn of 2017, it’s still standing as a dentist’s office.
