HILLSDALE, N.J. — The borough says it is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection grant of up to $381,000 to purchase a new Class 8 all-electric street sweeper and a Level 2 charging station.
The grant will allow the borough to replace its aging diesel-powered street sweeper with a cleaner, more efficient vehicle at no cost to local taxpayers.
The new electric street sweeper can operate for up to eight hours on a charge and will recharge overnight, ensuring it is ready for service each morning.
The borough aims to have the street sweeper delivered and placed into service as soon as possible, providing residents with improved service and a cleaner environment.
Beyond serving Hillsdale, says town admin Mike Ghassali in press release, the new street sweeper creates another opportunity to expand shared services with neighboring municipalities. Revenue generated through those partnerships can be dedicated to replacing aging borough vehicles and equipment, helping modernize the fleet while reducing costs for taxpayers.
Mayor Michael Sheinfield praised DPW Superintendent Barry Peterson for pursuing the grant opportunity.
“Barry recognized this opportunity, worked diligently through the application process and secured a tremendous win for our community,” Sheinfield said. “A $381,000 grant with no local match is an outstanding accomplishment. This investment not only replaces outdated equipment with modern technology but also positions Hillsdale to expand shared services and generate revenue that can be reinvested in our community.”
The borough says it remains committed to pursuing grants and partnerships that enhance municipal services, improve operational efficiency and deliver long-term value for Hillsdale taxpayers.
