Council meets Oct. 15 with focus on police, parks, and historic preservation

WESTWOOD—The mayor and council are set to hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at 101 Washington Ave. Residents are encouraged to attend and participate in discussions about several important issues, including police department improvements, park upgrades, and the preservation of local historic sites.

The meeting will open with an executive closed session at 7, where the council will address salary adjustments and a volunteer award. The public session follows at 7:30 p.m. after the meeting reopens and the flag salute.

Key Topics for Discussion:

  • Police Department Upgrades: The council will introduce Ordinance 24-32, proposing $30,000 from the borough’s capital fund surplus for improvements to the police department’s flooring and kitchenette renovation.
  • Park Enhancements: Ordinance 24-33 will allocate $9,500 from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs 2023 Local Recreational Improvement Grant to install four tandem swings at various parks in the borough.
  • Historic Site Designation: Ordinance 24-28, up for adoption, seeks to officially establish 84 Washington Ave. as a historic site, preserving its place in Westwood’s history.
  • Body Cameras for Police: Another significant ordinance up for adoption, 24-31, will provide $61,000 for the acquisition of body cameras for the police department and a sidewalk plow/salt spreader for the Department of Public Works, funded through the borough’s capital fund surplus.
