ENGLEWOOD—The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation (NNJCF) has launched Beyond the Wall: Developing Digital Content Illuminating The Black Women’s Mural, an interactive website developed through its ArtsBergen initiative. The site explores the meaning, significance, and creation of The Black Women’s Mural, a public artwork honoring Black suffragists and women in Englewood. The mural, painted by Tatyana Fazlalizadeh on the Women’s Rights Information Center (WRIC) building at 108 W. Palisade Ave., was unveiled in 2022.
The website offers biographies of the historic and living Black women featured in the mural, along with resources on women’s suffrage, voting rights, and related topics. It includes interviews with community members and features a map of other murals across the U.S. celebrating Black women’s suffrage.
Content was developed by Jasmine Daria Cannon, a scholar and writer, with website design by Lilith Haig and interviews recorded by Raphael Sebastian.
Community Involvement
Local partners, including former Councilman Charles Cobb, WRIC representatives, and other Englewood community members, will promote the project and help expand educational programming in schools and libraries.

The project is supported by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, and other local donors such as Age-Friendly Englewood, NVE Bank, and the Woman’s Club of Englewood.
