In the year 2019, this might look like someone’s haul from the farmer’s market. Well over a century ago, when this photo was taken at a house on Valley Place in Tenafly, all of these vegetables would have come from the garden. This boy’s mother or father was surely proud of that year’s harvest, having staged this photo around the young child. Lucky for this family, both the boy and the chicken cooperated with the photoshoot.
Back then, many residents kept animals, especially chickens for fresh eggs and meat. Many also canned their veggies to add to winter stores. A couple dozen filled jars are visible behind the boy in this photo.
