NORWOOD — Today the Northern Valley is the epitome of suburban living. Yet, if you go back a century, when the land was still largely undeveloped and the population was a fraction of what it is now, this region was more like “the sticks.” In fact, many homes were used as weekend getaways or summer retreats for those who lived in the city but wanted a taste of that fresh air and country life.

Dave Bloom, a dentist who had several offices in New York City, is one example. He actually owned a farm in Norwood from the late 1910s through the 1930s, which became a rural respite for his many family members. His siblings had houses on the property and all of their children were raised together.
