HACKENSACK—Bergen County has announced the launch of United We Serve Bergen, a countywide Week of Service scheduled for April 18–26 as part of its broader commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.
County Executive James J. Tedesco III and the Bergen County Board of Commissioners, in partnership with the Bergen 250 Initiative, said the program will connect residents with volunteer opportunities at community organizations, food pantries, historic sites, parks, and other locations across the county.
Officials said the initiative is intended to give residents, students, corporate groups, civic organizations, schools, and businesses a chance to take part in hands-on service projects while helping prepare sites for upcoming commemorative programming and addressing community needs.
“United We Serve is about turning commemoration into action,” Commissioner Tracy Zur said. “It’s about reconnecting with our neighbors and doubling down to support each other. As we remember that this began with ‘We the People,’ there’s no better way to honor our past than by securing our future. Rolling up our sleeves to help each other and our community fortifies our civic foundation.”
Tedesco said the county’s anniversary observance should be rooted in service as well as celebration.
“Bergen County has always stepped up when it matters most,” Tedesco said. “As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, United We Serve is an opportunity to bring people together, give back to our communities, and put the values we’re celebrating into action. This is about service, community, and making sure every resident has a chance to be part of this milestone.”
According to the county, volunteer opportunities will range from outdoor cleanups and beautification efforts to collection drives and hands-on projects benefiting food pantries, veterans, and seniors.
Officials said the week is designed to be flexible and accessible, with service opportunities available across Bergen County to accommodate a range of interests and schedules. Students may also use the program to earn community service hours, while businesses and corporate partners are encouraged to organize team-based volunteer efforts.
