On Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 3:35 p.m., township police reported a tractor trailer driver failed to negotiate the hill on Washington Avenue west of Van Emburgh Avenue.

While trying to back down the hill, the driver jackknifed the flat bed rig on the road. Police closed off the road until 5:15 p.m. The male driver was issued three summonses for no insurance, no inspection sticker, and improper display of plates, said Township of Washington Police Officer Heather Castronova.

Township of Washington police shut down Washington Avenue west of Van Emburgh Avenue when a tractor-trailer jackknifed trying to back up on the steep hill.

The truck was impounded for being unregistered and uninsured. Police said no one was injured in the incident.

On Thursday, Dec. 14, police said an inexperienced tractor-trailer driver again failed to negotiate a steep incline on Washington Avenue, and police were forced to close a portion of busy County Road 502.

Following consultation with Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Police Services Traffic Division, two summonses were issued to the male driver.

Summonses were for impeding the flow of traffic and careless driving.

After summonses were issued, police directed the driver to turn around on a nearby dead-end and re-enter Washington Avenue. However, the driver’s rig became stuck in a large snow-covered leaf pile.

A heavy-duty wrecker was called to remove the rig and get it back on its way, police said.

Police said weather conditions were not a factor in either incident.
