Boy Scout Eagle Project Benefits Children’s Garden

OLD TAPPAN, N.J.—Old Tappan Boy Scout Troop 132 Eagle Scout candidate Brendan Carey has completed his Eagle Project at Marydell Faith and Life Center in Nyack, N.Y., a property run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine.

The Center hosts a Spring Garden Club as well as the New Settlement summer camp for children that teaches kids how to plant, harvest, and prepare vegetables. The garden used for these programs suffered much damage from animals due to improper fencing.

Brendan planned the initiative to protect the 40-by-34-foot garden and led a team of volunteers to install new, secure fencing. The fence took several weeks to complete and the project consisted of raising funds and obtaining donations for materials and equipment as well as organizing volunteers to help.  This effort has enabled the children to continue to have a hands-on gardening experience for the duration of these programs.

Troop 132, led by Scoutmaster Francis Park, is a youth leadership organization dedicated to serving Old Tappan and the greater northern New Jersey community. The troop is part of the Boy Scouts of America Northern New Jersey Council, Three Rivers District, and is chartered by the Old Tappan First Aid Corps.
