ENGLEWOOD—If you’ve been thinking about adopting a furry companion, Save The Animals Rescue Team II (START II) has the perfect opportunity. On Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 4 p.m., the shelter will host a holiday adoption event at its Englewood location, 135 Cedar Lane.
With older kittens, cats, dogs, and puppies waiting to meet their forever families, this event offers the chance to find a new best friend just in time for the holidays. “We’re so excited to open our doors to the community and help these amazing animals find loving homes,” said Diane Errichiello, a longtime volunteer.
START II, a no-kill, all-volunteer rescue group, has served Bergen and Passaic counties for over 45 years. At the event, visitors can meet adoptable pets, enjoy light refreshments, and learn more about how to support the shelter.
While many pets are already available for adoption, the number may vary as new animals arrive and others find homes. For updated details, call Donna at 551-804-0019. The shelter also welcomes donations of pet food and supplies, including Friskies cat food, Fancy Feast Kitten Turkey and Chicken, and Milk Bones (made in the USA).
Meet Prince: A Star Waiting for His Moment
Among the animals eager to meet you is Prince, a playful and affectionate cat who has been waiting for a home since August. With his striking black-and-white markings, Prince is described as “extremely sweet and loving.” He enjoys playing with other cats and will follow you around like a puppy.
“Prince doesn’t like being picked up, probably because of his time in and out of cages, but we’re confident he’ll thrive in a patient, loving home,” Errichiello said. “He’s a wonderful companion waiting for the right person to give him a chance.”
Meet Wizard: A Fun-Loving Pup Ready for His Forever Home
Wizard, a 9-month-old hound mix, is ready to charm his way into your heart! This energetic pup, currently weighing 45 pounds, has been at START II since mid-October 2024, and he’s eager to find a loving home.
With his golden coat, bright white accents, and a winning smile, Wizard is a stunner. He’s a playful, friendly companion who would thrive in a house with a fenced-in yard and plenty of space to run. Older kids and a canine sibling would make him even happier!
While Wizard is already showing how smart he is—he’s mastered “sit”—he’s excited to learn more, including leash manners and other tricks. His ideal adopter would be someone patient, active, and ready to match his enthusiasm for life.
Please note: Wizard isn’t a fan of cats, so he’ll need a home without feline friends.
A Shelter in Need
While the holiday adoption event brings hope, START II is facing significant challenges. Errichiello shared that adoptions are at an all-time low, with little interest in the shelter’s animals. “We have so many sweet cats and dogs, but the interest just isn’t there,” she said.
The shelter is critically short on volunteers, many of whom have aged out, fallen ill, or stepped away for personal reasons. “People want to get paid now,” Errichiello added, explaining that START II has always relied on unpaid volunteers to sustain its work.
Spaying and neutering delays are also a concern. A recent influx of unaltered animals has overwhelmed the shelter’s ability to find veterinary services. “We’re taking these animals in, but not being able to get them ready for homes fast enough feels like a setback,” she said.
Additionally, the shelter’s photographer is recovering from COVID-19, making it harder to showcase adoptable pets. “Without proper photos, it’s difficult to highlight the incredible personalities of these animals,” Errichiello said.
How You Can Help
START II is calling on the community to step up. Whether through adoption, fostering, volunteering, or donating, there are many ways to support the shelter’s lifesaving work.
