Westwood, New Jersey — The borough council on Feb. 20 approved Cataldo F. Fazio as municipal court judge. Mayor John Birkner Jr. administered the oath of office.

Fazio, a certified civil trial attorney, is principal at the Law Office of Cataldo F. Fazio and was appointed municipal court judge for the City of Hoboken in 2010.

Municipal Court Judge Cataldo F. Fazio takes the oath of office at the Feb. 20 meeting of the mayor and council.

The New Jersey Courts website explains the municipal courts in New Jersey are considered courts of limited jurisdiction, having responsibility for motor vehicle and parking tickets, minor criminal-type offenses (for example, simple assault and bad checks), municipal ordinance offenses (such as noise or code violations) and other offenses, such as fish and game violations.

A municipal court usually has jurisdiction only over cases that occur within the municipality, the site says. Many serious criminal cases, such as robbery, auto theft, and assault, start out as complaints filed in Municipal Court but are transferred to Superior Court at the county courthouse.

Fazio serves on the boards of the United Way of Hudson County and Northeast New Jersey Legal Services.
