Charges pending as Westwood Regional 2024 grad ceremony marred by violence

Police say 'this type of behavior becoming more common'; investigation seeks video

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON—The Washington Township Police Department reported an incident at the Westwood Regional High School senior class graduation on Thursday, June 20. Following the ceremony, multiple physical altercations erupted on the football field.

Officers on the scene intervened to separate the parties involved and disperse the crowds. One individual was injured and transported to a nearby hospital, while several others received on-site treatment and declined further medical attention.

The Class of 2024 is the first full year of the Covid-19 class. A perusal of family posts on the ceremony showed, in contrast to the violence after, an abundance of love, cheer, and pride.

“This was supposed to be an enjoyable night for the Westwood High School senior class, who have worked hard and waited for this moment. Unfortunately, it was marred by egregious behavior,” the police department, via Cpl. Chris Osenbruck, said in a statement shared with Pascack Press.

Authorities are aware of multiple videos circulating on social media and are conducting a thorough investigation. The department is reviewing footage and collecting statements from witnesses and those involved. Anyone with video footage or information is urged to contact Detective Sgt. Fasciano at SFasciano@washtwppolice.org. Criminal charges are pending.

“Unfortunately, this type of behavior is becoming more common. As we work to prosecute those responsible, it’s a good opportunity to speak to your children, family members, and friends about appropriate behavior. If you witness an issue, call the police. If a situation becomes dangerous, leave immediately and follow police instructions,” the statement added.

Multiple agencies assisted in dispersing the crowds. The Washington Township Police Department expressed gratitude to the Hillsdale, Westwood, Old Tappan, Oradell, Emerson, River Vale, Waldwick, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, Paramus, and Bergen County Sheriff’s departments. They also thanked the Washington Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Westwood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and River Vale Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their assistance with the injured.
