In what was described by Closter police investigator as a flimflam, a thief reportedly duped a Stop & Shop store clerk out of $600 on Aug. 9.

That day, at 7:35 p.m., an unknown man attempted to purchase $1,500 worth of Visa gift cards at the store. The suspect counted out the money and handed it to the employee, who then counted the cash and advised the suspect he was short $40.

“The suspect then requested the money back and placed $600 into his pocket and pulled out the $40,” investigators wrote in their report. “The employee did not recount the cash when it was given back to him.”

The suspect.

Police said security tapes then show the man leaving the service desk after pocketing the cash. The store’s loss prevention officer stated the same suspect went to Emerson Stop & Shop and committed the same theft.

The case was transferred to the detective bureau. The suspect was described as wearing a baseball cap, white T-shirt, red shorts with black and white stripes on the side and black sneakers. Anyone with information on the suspect can call (201) 768-5000.
