CLOSTER POLICE: Tightly Held Purse Contained Heroin, Pills

CLOSTER, N.J.—An officer on patrol May 1 at 12:35 a.m. observed a vehicle with tinted windows and conducted a motor vehicle stop on Schraalenburgh Road.

While the woman, 39, gathered her documents, the officer detected the odor of burnt marijuana and notified her that he would be conducting a probable cause search of her vehicle. When notified that she was required to step out of the vehicle the woman handed over a THC vape pen and continued to grip her purse tightly.

While waiting for other officers to arrive, the woman began to cry and appeared to be having a panic attack. After pleading to go home and refusing to exit the vehicle she responded yes to having an ambulance called for her.

“She continued to sit inside the car and not let go of her purse,” the officer wrote. “This raised my reasonable suspicion to believe there was more illegal contraband inside the purse and within the vehicle.”

A search was conducted after several minutes during which officers found an uncapped syringe and needle, glassine envelopes, and a container with various prescription pills in the vehicle. In her purse police found more envelopes, some containing heroin, and a container with pills. Some of the envelopes found were labeled “black jack.”

The woman was arrested and transported to the Closter police headquarters. She was charged with possession of heroin, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of a syringe.
