Communities Celebrate: Northern Valley Town Days Underway

NORTHERN VALLEY AREA, N.J.—One of the great things about living in the Northern Valley is the sense of community, which at certain times throughout the calendar year is amplified by special events.

One of those times is now, as the summer turns into fall, when local communities host their traditional “town day” celebrations where neighbors share camaraderie.

On Sept. 7, three communities came together for their own special events. Harrington Park Town Day featured all sorts of fun at Highland Field. Northvale Town Day was a day for neighbors at Hogan Park. And Closter’s belated Labor Day festivities and fireworks—initially postponed due to inclement weather—culminated with a boom at Veterans’ Memorial Field.

But there’s still plenty more to come for nearby towns.

• The upcoming fireworks presentation scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 22 in Cresskill will just about wrap up a series of events and activities that have over the last few months commemorated the borough’s Quasquicentennial or 125th Anniversary.

• Demarest Day will be Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Demarest Duck Pond. There will be kids’ rides and inflatables, games and prizes, food trucks, face painting and vendors. Afterward, the Demarest Fire Department’s 125th Anniversary Celebration from 3 to 7 p.m. will feature an open house, demos, giveaways, live music, and food from 5Alarm Backyard BBQ. The day will culminate with fireworks at 7:30 p.m. at Wakelee field. (Rain date: Sept. 22.)

• The 2019 Norwood Day will be Saturday, Sept. 28 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Field, including live music, rides, face painting, a fishing derby, touch-a-truck, food and drinks, a beer garden, vendors and presentations by local emergency services. There’s also the inaugural Norwood Day Cornhole Tournament, now inviting two-person teams to sign up.

• Celebrate Haworth Day 2019 Saturday, Oct. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. on Terrace Street. Check the borough’s website for details as the event approaches. (Rain date: Oct. 5.) But first, Haworth is holding its 5K and 10K Color Burst Run, and an adults-only field day to benefit Haworth Hope Fund, on Saturday, Sept. 21. Check the borough website for details.

• In lieu of town day, the Borough of Old Tappan is holding its 125th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, Oct. 19 with a full slate of fun activities following the third annual Superhero 5K. (Anniversary celebration rain date: Oct. 20.)
