To the editor:
I commend and thank you for your article on page 31 of the July 29 Pascack Press, “New Jersey to feel the heat, study concludes.”
Any honest person who is paying attention knows that if we fail to seriously reduce greenhouse gas emissions quickly, living conditions around the world will become unbearable.
Your article, based on a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, gets specific and spells out with precision what we can expect if governments and corporations are permitted to avoid sufficient corrective action.
We learn that New Jersey, which has averaged three days a year of dangerous 100 degree temperature, will experience 24 such scorchers per year at mid century, soon enough to be experienced by most of your readers.
Historically we have suffered through 22 days per year with a heat index of 90 degrees. At mid century this will increase to 61 days per year of this misery. Your informative article presents many other frightening predictions.
It is unfortunate that major daily newspapers and television news sources are not doing much more to wake us up to the urgency of the situation.
