CRESSKILL—Mayor Benedict Romeo was honored Feb. 19 by the governing body for his longtime elected service to the borough.
Councilwoman Kathleen Savas praised Romeo, Cresskill’s longest-sitting elected official, saying in part, “Ben has accomplished so much because of his love of the community.”
Savas noted that Romeo, a lifelong resident, attended school in Cresskill and has “always placed the town first.”
Romeo, elected in 1999 and serving his sixth term as mayor — he was elected to a new four-year term in November 2019 that he began serving this year — was presented with a large photo portrait of himself that will be hung in the borough hall.
“I really appreciate this,” Romeo said. “To all of my colleagues, it has been a wonderful 20 years.”
Savas said that Romeo has governed with “non-partisan leadership” and noted his numerous accomplishments with infrastructure projects, parks, and open space — as well as for the thoughtful and tearful speeches that he gives each Memorial Day.
