WESTWOOD, NEW JERSEY—A 77-year-old borough resident has died of injuries sustained Feb. 6 when she was struck by a car while while crossing Broadway at Irvington Street.

Police were hunting for video evidence to shed light on the incident, in which the driver, an 86-year-old River Vale woman, struck the pedestrian, who was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack with serious head and internal injuries.

Conditions at the time of the accident, 10:11 a.m., were fair, and all crosswalks were properly indicated, Mayor John Birkner Jr. reported at the Feb. 6 meeting of the mayor and council.

Police updated the press on Feb. 7 to say the resident had died of her injuries.

According to Westwood police Lt. Jay Hutchinson, the investigation is ongoing. It was not clear late Feb. 6 whether the pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk.

“We’re trying to determine that. We’re not 100 percent sure. We’re trying to find some video,” Hutchinson said at the time.

Officials have been working to make sure pedestrians and drivers stay alert to the rules of the road, particularly to do with crosswalk safety.
