ENGLEWOOD, N.J.—County prosecutors say 44-year-old Allex G. Velez of Englewood sexually assaulted a juvenile, then fled the area after being confronted by the victim’s family members.
Velez was arrested July 21 in Prospect Park on warrants for sexual assault by contact (second degree) and endangering the welfare of a child (third degree), resulting from an Englewood police and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit investigation, said Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.
Englewood police first learned of the allegation on July 20, Musella said.
On July 22, the ongoing investigation revealed additional information and Velez was then charged with the first degree crime of aggravated sexual assault, Musella said. He was issued a copy of that complaint while still in the Bergen County Jail, Musella said.
“Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and he would like to thank the Englewood Police Department for its assistance in this investigation,” the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
