ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY ——A 20-year-old former Englewood resident—who performed in Englewood Idol in 2014—was found dead from a gunshot wound to her head in her northwest Houston apartment Feb. 2. Houston police are investigating, but no charges had yet been filed as of press time, they reported.

The victim, Danielle Chaney, was found by her boyfriend lying on her bed, Houston police reported. He brought Chaney outside in an attempt to render aid before paramedics arrived and transported her to the hospital.

Chaney was reportedly studying marketing at Texas Southern University, and occasionally did modeling, including several times in Houston as well as with local designers.

Chaney was born in Teaneck, spent her first few years in Englewood, and the family moved to Houston in 2001. The family moved back to New Jersey in 2014 before returning to Texas.

“It’s still considered an active investigation,” said a Houston Police Department public information officer on Feb. 15. “Once they’re wrapped up with their investigation, they determine whether charges will be filed. For now, it’s an active investigation.”

Police are awaiting a ruling by the medical examiner to determine the cause of death, said Victor Senties, Houston Police Department public information officer, on Feb. 15.

Anyone with information about the case should call the Houston Police Department Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-8477.

A memorial service for Chaney was held Feb. 16 at Community Baptist Church in Englewood.
