Englewood, New Jersey: 2019, The Year in Photographs

ENGLEWOOD, N.J.—It was a year of joy, a year of wistful remembrances, a year of great strides in arts and education, a year of camaraderie. 

As we herald in 2020, here’s a look back at some of the many events that Englewood held in 2019.

Jan. 3: The Woman’s Club of Englewood awards $28,000 in scholarships to 11 young women to further their education.

• Jan. 7: Gov. Phil Murphy attended the swearing in of Mayor Michael Wildes and Councilman Charles Cobb. Katherine Glynn was elected Council President. Also pictured: Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton of Englewood joined Murphy and Wildes at the reorganization meeting.

• Jan 11: Englewood Idol crowned a new winner, Dwight Morrow High School senior Genesis Capellan, and raised money for the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund.

• Jan. 21: Rev. Preston Thompson led a march from City Hall to honor Martin Luther King Day.

• Feb. 1: Students at The Performing Arts School at bergenPAC performed “Mamma Mia” to sold out audiences.

• March 14: The Friends of the Englewood Library hosted “Operation Ice Rink” to encourage children to read.

• March 16: Englewood Public Library hosted Kultur Kool Holi Festival.

• March 28: The Rotary Club of Englewood honored 12 of its over 90-year-old community leaders.

• April 28: The Englewood Historical Society hosted a book launch party for “Extraordinary Englewood,” a compendium of interviews of the city’s leaders and innovators written by Hillary Viders for Northern Valley Press.

• April & May: Rotary Club of Englewood gave dictionaries to third graders in all Englewood Schools.

• May 10 & 11: Students at the Janis E. Dismus Middle School performed “High School Musical.”

• May 18: Art Walk Englewood showcased local talent in a gala festival.

May 27: Englewood commemorated Memorial Day, honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

• June 13- 16: Englewood celebrated Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery.

• June 19: Englewood celebrated its first Pride flag raising event.

• June 20: Dwight Morrow High School Graduation.

• July 1 to Aug. 9: The Englewood Chamber of Commerce’s Summer Business Apprenticeship Program for Englewood students.

• July 2: Englewood celebrates Independence Day with fireworks and festivities.

• Thursdays in July and August: The Englewood Public Library hosted its popular “Jazz under the Stars” concert series.

• July and August: The Bergen Family Center hosted a summer long “Drop in Teen Program.”

• July 25- 27: Englewood Sidewalk Sale and Night Out.

• Aug. 13: Englewood Rally Against Gun Violence.

• Aug. 18: Englewood Community Day.

• Aug. 25: Jabari Society held its annual Back to School Cookout.

• Aug. 29:Getting Together in Englewood.”  

• Sept. 5- Englewood Public Library helds its first “Novel Night” gala fundraiser.

• Sept. 11: Englewood Commemorated the victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attack.

Sept. 20: DMHS Students hold rally to protest Global Warming.

• Oct. 20: Flat Rock Brook Great Fall Festival.

• Oct. 29: Englewood Health hosts Walk for Awareness of breast cancer.

Nov. 11: The community saluted men and women who have served the United States Armed Forces on Veterans Day.

Nov. 16: Elizabeth Morrow String Orchestra students perform at bergenPAC with world renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman.

• Dec. 7: Englewood Holiday Tree Lighting.

• Dec. 15: Englewood Winter Party at the Mackay Ice Rink.

• Dec. 19: Englewood Toy Drive gives out 500 Christmas gifts to children of low income families at the Englewood Field Club.

• Dec. 22: Englewood Menorah Lighting.
