ENGLEWOOD, N.J.—On Monday, Nov. 4, approximately 12:02 p.m., a car accident involving a 90-year-old driver occurred along East Palisade Avenue, leaving a trail of destruction that included knocking over a parking meter, a planter and a public trash can, all before the car smashed into a utility pole and stopped.
The car, a 2016 Kia SUV, narrowly missed several pedestrians along Englewood’s busy East Palisade Avenue. “Thankfully no one was struck,” said Deputy Chief Gregory Halstead in a statement.
Halstead said preliminary reports suggested the driver was initially parked in a stall along East Palisade Avenue. It was not determined what happened to cause the accident, he said.
After the vehicle crashed into a light pole, two city employees—Venton Miles and Cesar Naranjo—assisted pedestrians in freeing the driver from the vehicle and kept him calm until the arrival of fire and police personnel, said Halstead.
Emergency medical service personnel rendered first aid at the scene. The driver suffered a head laceration and was transported to Hackensack Meridian Health in Hackensack.
An accident investigation is ongoing, he said.
