Go Local: Pascack Valley Halloween haunts and happenings

Grab your costumes and head to some of these fun Halloween haunts and happenings this weekend.

It’s a great time of year to be a kid in Pascack Valley. Parents, are you looking for some Halloween fun for your kids? Here are some local haunts and happenings.

• The Park Ridge Recreation and Cultural Committee will present its Annual Ragamuffin Parade on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. sharp. The parade starts at Park Ridge Depot Square on Park Avenue and ends at Davies Field behind borough hall. There will be a costume judging contest, refreshments, games, music and fun for children 12 and under.  The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. Non-perishable food donations for the Pascack Food Center are requested.  For questions, call (201) 573-1800 ext. 521.

• The Emerson Fire Department is hosting a Halloween parade on Saturday, Oct. 28 at noon. (Rain date Oct. 29.) The parade begins on High Street and Highland Avenue, and ends at the fire house. Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided. There will also be a costume contest at the fire house for children up to sixth grade.

• The Township of Washington Fire Department and the Township are hosting a Ragamuffin Parade and party, followed by a haunted house experience, at the Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. Line up on Finnerty Place just outside the library. There will be costume judging, candy, and prizes. Organizers note this is not a school-sponsored event. Ages zero to 10 welcome. In the event of rain, the fun moves inside the library.

 • Residents are invited to the Montvale Special Events Committee invited you to the Annual Halloween Carnival for all ghosts and goblins through grade 4. Costumes welcomed, but not required. Carnival games of fun and skill sponsored by Fieldstone students. Parents of young ones required to stay. The carnival will be held on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Fieldstone Middle School cafetorium and gym from 7-8:30 p.m. Wear sneakers.

• The Westwood Recreation Department will hold its Ragamuffin Parade on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. All pre-school through third grade children are welcome to join the parade. It ends at the community center, where there will be entertainment and goodies. (In the event of rain, the parade will be cancelled and the program will begin in the community center at 10 a.m.)
Halloween in Hillsdale is Saturday, Oct. 28 with a parade starting at 10 a.m. sharp. The parade line up starts on Central Avenue (near borough hall) at 9:45 a.m. and will go through the center of town to the George White School on Magnolia Avenue, where there will be fun and treats on the field. There’s also a magic show at 11 a.m. (In the event of rain, the event starts at George White School at 10 a.m.)
• Woodcliff Lake residents can join the borough’s parks and recreation department for its annual halloween bash, featuring a costume contest (all ages and pets!), pumpkin pie baking contest, light snacks, beverages, games and spooky trails. It’s planned for Saturday, Oct. 28 (rain date: Oct. 29) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Westervelt Lydecker grounds.
• On Sunday, Oct. 29 from 4-6 p.m., come trunk or treating in River Vale! The River Vale Community Church invites the families of the community to join them for free hot dogs and popcorn as well as games, giveaways and, of course, decorated cars full of candy. Children of all ages are welcome. For more information, click here or call (201) 664-8640. There is no charge for the event. River Vale Community Church is located on the corner of Rivervale Road and New Street in River Vale.

• The Thomas J. Riley Senior Center presents its inaugural Trunk or Treat on Oct. 29 from 1:30-3 p.m.  This is an opportunity for families to trick or treat out of the decorated trunks of parked cars. A $20 trunk sponsorship includes family admission or a $5 per trick-or-treater. The event will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial Park in the train station parking lot, 49 Park Ave., Westwood.
