Handyman Accused of Sex Assault Against Child Inside Demarest Residence

DEMAREST, N.J.—A married, self-employed handyman from Morristown is in Bergen County Jail, accused of sex assault against a child in a Demarest residence where he was working, prosecutors said.

On Aug. 20, it was reported to the Demarest Police Department that Alejandro Velasquez, 44, of Morristown, sexually assaulted a juvenile under the age of 13 while working in a residence in Demarest, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said in a statement.

“As a result of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Demarest Police Department, [Velasquez] was arrested on Aug. 20 in Demarest, and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault by contact in violation  and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Velasquez was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court on Wednesday, Aug. 21, where records show he is still being held.

Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and would like to thank the Demarest Police Department for its assistance in this investigation.
