HAWORTH, N.J.—Harrington Park’s William Maltin, 25, won the Haworth 5K Run/Walk, finishing the 3.1-mile course that winds through the borough’s picturesque streets in 16 minutes, 31.8 seconds.

In its 10th anniversary year, the Haworth Road Runners Association—a group of local residents and business owners who organize this annual race and donate its proceeds to charitable organizations—expanded the event to include a 10K race, which saw 94 runners participate, ranging in age from 11 to 75.

Cresskill’s Michael Whalen, 24, outpaced the 10K field to win at 35 minutes, 58.6 seconds.

The top female finishers were: Holly Miller, second overall in the 10K at 40 minutes, 33.2 seconds; and Fort Lee’s Jen Dimitriadis, who ran the 5K in 20 minutes, 32.9 seconds.

The fun day that promotes community and fitness also features a color burst run that was a fun way to finish the day. What’s a color burst? It’s a 1-mile course with several stations where colored powder is thrown on participants as they pass by, leaving them covered in a rainbow of hues.

The day began with the 10K at 8 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9:45 a.m. and the color burst at 10:45 a.m.

This year, 366 people crossed the finish line in the 5K. Second place was Michael Whalen of Cresskill, fresh from his 10K win, who was 14 seconds behind the leader. Ken Kohlbrenner of Waldwick, 34, was third at just over 18 minutes. Fourth overall was Haworth’s own Ivan Timochko, 12, who ran the race in 18 minutes, 14.7 seconds.

Also in the 5K, 6-year-old Shunya Hirai of Haworth was the youngest to finish the race, while 82-year-old Michael Grimaldi of Glen Ridge was the oldest runner.

In the 10K race, local highlights included: Travis Taggart of Closter, 31, coming in fourth overall; and Kimberly Aspholm, 49, of Haworth, finishing second among women racers.

While the Haworth 5K and 10K are over until next year, the racing season is just getting started for Northern Valley running enthusiasts. Coming up soon: The Norwood Fast and Flat 5K will be on Saturday, Oct. 5, and the Harrington Park 5K Fall Spectacular will be Saturday, Nov. 2.
