Deadly overdoses from people using heroin or prescription based opioids or derivatives are the leading cause of accidental death in New Jersey*.

The issue is considered a nation-wide epidemic, so it’s no surprise Northern Valley Press has been able to see the effects of the problem through the lens of the weekly police blotter, a compilation of news and reports from area law enforcement.

This week: Closter Police detailed a recent heroin arrest; the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office shared news of overdose victims saved, and lost, from overdoses; and county authorities said they made a major drug bust of a couple traveling with their small child.

It’s a problem authorities have said they can’t arrest their way out of, and a multi-faceted approach including law enforcement, public awareness and addition treatment and counseling has been utilized.

Here are the three recent incidents from this week’s police blotter:

1) POLICE BLOTTER: Woman, asleep at the wheel in Closter, had heroin in her boot

2) POLICE BLOTTER: Update—‘#StopTheODs’

3) POLICE BLOTTER: Couple with small child had thousands of heroin bags
