Editor’s note: We updated this story on Oct. 11 in “District says ‘no credible threat’ was made against middle school; urges care, restraint on social media.”
TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON—The Westwood Regional School District confirmed Thursday night that a threat of imminent gun violence at Westwood Regional Middle School, on Third Avenue in Westwood, was investigated and found not credible.
According to a memo to families signed by acting superintendent/Director of Secondary Education Bronwen Calderón, the individual in question has no access to firearms. Out of caution, Calderón said, extra police will be present during drop-off on Friday and counselors will be available to support students.
Calderón’s entire memo:
Dear Westwood Regional School District Families,
On the afternoon of Oct. 10, 2024, Westwood Regional Middle School staff was alerted to a threat alleging an act of gun violence potentially occurring at the middle school on Oct. 11, 2024. Our staff immediately contacted local law enforcement, and the Westwood and Washington Township Police Departments conducted a joint investigation. They interviewed several individuals involved and visited the alleged suspect.
At the conclusion of their investigation, it was determined that the individual in question does not have access to firearms, and the threat is not deemed credible at this time. While we cannot share specific details due to the private nature of the incident, I can confirm that law enforcement has handled the matter swiftly. However, please know that we take any threat to the safety of our students very seriously and will continue to prioritize their well-being. Our police force and administrative team made this our number one priority and will continue to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
Out of an abundance of caution, you will notice an additional police presence during drop-off tomorrow morning to ensure the safety of all students. We also want to stress the importance of students reporting any concerning information to a staff member so that swift and decisive action can be taken.
School counselors will be available to support students who may feel unsettled by this situation, and a threat assessment will follow to ensure all appropriate safety measures are in place.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Thank you for your trust and continued support.
Sincerely,
Bronwen Calderón, Ed.D.
Dr. Bronwen Calderón
