HACKENSACK—Thee Bergen County Board of Commissioners held their annual reorganization meeting on Jan. 4 to swear in three newly re-elected commissioners and attend to New Year’s housekeeping. Commissioner Thomas J. Sullivan, president of IBEW Local 164, was elected chairman of the board; Germaine M. Ortiz is vice chairwoman and Dr. Joan M. Voss is chair pro tempore.

After Bergen County Clerk John Hogan announced the November vote tallies, Gov. Phil Murphy swore in commissioners Mary J. Amoroso (D–Mahwah), Ortiz (D–Emerson), and Sullivan (D–Montvale) to their third full terms in office. Murphy was joined in the ceremony by Bergen County Executive James Tedesco III, U.S. District Court Judge Julien X. Neals, and Sen. Paul Sarlo.

Sullivan said, “I am honored to have the opportunity to once again represent the residents of our great county. This year will be about infrastructure—working to improve our roads, bridges, culverts, and most importantly, moving the needle on the much-needed Route 17 bottleneck project. My colleagues and I are thrilled with the accomplishments we have had thus far but we are looking forward to building on that success by continuing to improve the quality of life for people that live and work in Bergen County.”

Ortiz said, “It brings me great joy to return for another term and serve as Vice Chairwoman of the Board. In the upcoming year I look forward to advocating for Bergen County families and continuing our great work with Bergen Community College and our incredible technical schools.”

Amoroso noted, “I am so thankful for the continued support of our community here in Bergen County. I remain committed to serving all Bergen County residents to the best of my ability, while working to lower our carbon footprint and safeguard our resources for future generations.”
