ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Local news publishers, editors, reporters, sales staff and others working in community journalism are invited to gather Wednesday, July 1, at The Stone Pony for “Born to Run the Local News,” a summer meetup focused on building sustainable local news organizations.
The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the legendary Asbury Park music venue, 913 Ocean Ave. North. It is sponsored by Broadstreet and the Center for Cooperative Media.
Organizers describe the gathering as a chance for people working in local news to connect, trade ideas and recharge at a time when publishers and newsroom staffs are facing significant business and editorial pressures.
The program begins at 11 a.m. with lunch, drinks and networking with media professionals from New Jersey and beyond.
At 1 p.m., Kenny Katzgrau, publisher of redbankgreen and founder of Broadstreet, will lead a session on building a local news outlet that can stand for 100 years. The session will touch on mission-driven publishing, community-powered content, local advertising and sales, and building support among readers, advertisers and staff.
The event is aimed at publishers, editors, reporters, revenue leads, founders and others working to sustain local news. Organizers also note that attendees may want to bring swimsuits and visit the beach afterward.
Tickets are $5. Refunds are available up to seven days before the event. Paid parking is available.
Registration is through Eventbrite.
