Masked suspects flee after attempted burglary on Julia Court while resident was home

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON — A home on Julia Court on the township’s west side was entered early Wednesday morning, Dec. 31, in what police described as an apparent attempt to locate car keys while the resident was inside.

Township of Washington police said the incident occurred around 4:50 a.m. Entry was gained when a masked suspect forced open a rear window. Once inside, the suspect was “allegedly looking for car keys,” police said, but backed out after hearing the homeowner.

The suspect exited through the same window used to enter, police said.

Police said three masked suspects were allegedly involved. They were last seen getting into a dark-colored, four-door sedan and heading toward Linwood Avenue.

The incident is being investigated by the Township of Washington Police Department, assisted by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation, police said.

In a statement, police reminded residents that burglaries occur more often during winter months and the holiday season, citing fewer daylight hours that can help suspects stay concealed. Police urged residents to eliminate opportunities by locking doors, windows and gates, securing vehicles, and removing keys and key fobs from cars, since burglars may attempt to enter homes to steal them.

Police also encouraged residents who are away to use lights on timers, pause or redirect deliveries, arm alarms, and ensure cameras are working.

Vehicle theft Dec. 19

Police also reported a vehicle theft earlier this month in a separate incident that underscores the importance of securing vehicles and keys. On Friday, Dec. 19, police said they responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from a Fern Street residence on the east side of town. The vehicle was taken between approximately 5 and 5:30 a.m., police said, and it was reported that the keys had been left inside.

Police did not identify any suspects in that incident, and authorities have not said the cases are connected. Still, the department is urging residents to remain vigilant and take precautions.
