Memorial Day Events in Closter

CLOSTER, N.J.—Join the Closter Elks Lodge 2304, Leroy S. Mead Post 111 American Legion and the Borough of Closter for the 2019 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27. 

The 2019 Post 111 grand marshal is Frank Benz. Frank is celebrating his 60th anniversary as a member of the American Legion.    

The 2019 Memorial Day schedule of events in respect and honor of the 18 Closter residents who gave the ultimate sacrifice in World Wars I and II, and Vietnam is as follows:

• 8:30 a.m.—Leroy S. Mead Post 111, American Legion Memorial Service, Veterans Monument Park, Herbert Avenue and Closter Dock Road.

• 9 a.m.—Closter Fire Department Service, 100 Ruckman Road.

• 10 a.m.—Memorial Day Parade (9:30 a.m. assembly in the St. Mary’s Church parking area, steps off at 10 a.m.).

The parade begins on Legion Place at High Street, continues east on High Street to Closter Dock Road, bearing left; then proceeds north on Closter Dock Road then west onto Harrington Avenue, concluding at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Memorial Day Ceremony is held on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park, immediately following the conclusion of the parade. 

Should weather pose a problem, the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Closter Elks Lodge, located on Railroad Avenue. In either event, all are invited to the Closter Elks Lodge for free refreshments at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The Mayor’s Trophy will be awarded to the parade group that displays the most innovative use of Red, White & Blue! Creativity is important to enhance the parade…floats, banners, etc. will all add to the community spirit of saluting our service men and women.
