MONTVALE, N.J. — Special Law Enforcement Officer III Roger Caron of the Montvale Police Department was patrolling Pascack Hills High School on Tuesday, April 17 when he found a 17-year-old female student who was showing signs of choking. When asked if she was, the distressed girl nodded her head.

Caron immediately initiated the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the object from the girl’s throat. After several thrusts, the object exited her body, ultimately saving her life. For further evaluation, she was brought to the nurse’s office. Despite the fact that the Heimlich maneuver can successfully terminate a choking cycle, medical attention must always follow because damage can be done to the ribs.

Caron and other Class III SLEOs are retired police officers who have returned to work in school safety and security. They are trained in administering first aid and CPR. They also have taken a security resource officer (SRO) course.

Since September 2017, they have provided security and a police presence in both Pascack Hills High School on the part of the Montvale Police Department and Pascack Valley High School by the Hillsdale Police Department.
