NORWOOD, N.J.—Jersey City’s Jose Veras set the pace—“a blistering time” of 15 minutes, 12 seconds, a new course record—as 343 runners crossed the finish line at the Norwood Fast & Flat 5K, held Saturday, Oct. 5.
Coming in 11th overall, and first among all women runners, was Ivette Mejia of New York City, who finished at 17 minutes, 1.2 seconds, also a new record for women.
“Thanks again to all who joined us…for our most competitive race ever, where two new course records were also set!” said race organizers.
The race drew participants from all over the region, but among the hometown crowd, 15-year-old Ronald Larrea of Norwood was the first resident to cross the finish line, followed by Diana Ceylan and James Kinneary.
“Founded in 2005, the Norwood Fast & Flat 5K is a renowned, go-to race for runners all over Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Rockland, and other surrounding counties looking to blaze a new PR in a high-energy atmosphere on a lightning quick course, usually in optimal autumn running conditions. Now in year 15, the race also attracts many recreational runners and walkers,” according to race organizers.
It also attracts both young and old participants, who help the race raise money for local causes through their participation.
Jack Morrow, 9, of Norwood was the second fastest runner under 10—at a time of 25 minutes, 52 seconds—and New York’s Ruher Kwit, at 87 years old, was the oldest runner to cross the finish line.
