CLOSTER
Driver arrested for marijuana
– On Jan. 29 at about 10:17 p.m., Patrolman Ryan Walsh was observing a black Mercedes traveling down High Street in Closter when he noticed that air fresheners were hanging from the rear view mirror. Walsh conducted a motor vehicle stop on Old Hook Road. The driver provided his license, registration, and insurance card to the officer.

While speaking to the driver—a 19-year-old man from Saddle Brook—Walsh detected the odor of raw marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Patrolman Justin Krapels was called for backup and arrived on the scene.

The driver became extremely defensive and nervous when questioned about the marijuana, and he insisted there was no illegal contraband in his car. He was advised that if he did not exit the vehicle, he would be placed into custody. The driver stepped out of his car. Sgt. James Buccola arrived as back up.

A motor vehicle search was conducted. As the driver exited the car, an odor of marijuana was detected on him. The search yielded negative results, but the driver claimed that there was not any illegal contraband in the car. However, the top center console was searched and a clear plastic bag with marijuana was located inside it.

The driver was placed under arrest and was transported to police headquarters for processing. The driver was issued three motor vehicle summonses, including operation of a motor vehicle while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, obstruction of windshield for vision, and failure to notify the DMV of the day of his address change. A criminal complaint and the offenses of possession of marijuana under 50 grams, and failure to turn over controlled dangerous substance to law enforcement were issued. He is due to report in Closter Municipal Court on Feb. 20 at 4:30 p.m.

TEANECK
Fatal fire

A fire that killed two 81-year-old residents in their Teaneck home on Jan. 28 does not appear to be suspicious, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said.
The single family residence at 130 Sherman Ave. was consumed by heavy fire and the cause is undetermined due to the extensive fire damage, Calo said.
Firefighters and emergency personnel from Hackensack, Englewood, Bogota and Ridgefield Park assisted on the scene, eyewitnesses said.
