The woman initially claimed that she had been dropped off by her friends, who she was unable to locate. After further questioning she admitted that she was dropped off at a local bank branch to attempt to cash a counterfeit check. A computer check of the woman showed that she was wanted in New York State over a similar forgery offense.
Local bank branches were contacted and the bank where the woman attempted to pass the check was identified and the check was confirmed as counterfeit. The teller that served the suspect positively identified her at which point she was placed under arrest. A search of the defendant yielded several bags that contained heroin, a hypodermic needle, and a counterfeit Pennsylvania driver’s license.
The woman was charged with uttering a forged document, possession of a counterfeit government document, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. After processing, the defendant was remanded to the Bergen County Jail.

TENAFLY
Car chase ensues as police investigate fake check incident – On Monday, Nov. 20 at 2:10 p.m., Tenafly Police were alerted to an individual attempting to pass a fraudulent check at the Chase Bank on County Road at the intersection of Central Avenue.
Officers responded to the area and observed an occupied black BMW sports utility vehicle with New York license plates idling on Central Avenue, just across the street from the bank.
Two detectives entered the bank looking for the suspect, while patrol officers approached the vehicle to investigate. As officers approached the car on foot, it quickly accelerated from the scene heading north on Piermont Road. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it entered Cresskill near East Madison Avenue. The vehicle turned onto East Madison Avenue, and ended up traveling south on County Road.
While attempting to stop the vehicle, one marked Tenafly patrol car crashed into a utility pole on County Road near East Madison Avenue. As a result of the crash, the utility pole was knocked over, obstructing both lanes of County Road. The suspect vehicle was last seen traveling south on County Road toward Tenafly.
The involved officer was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and released a short time later. No other vehicles were involved and the Cresskill Police Department is investigating the crash.
Meanwhile, Tenafly detectives were able to arrest one suspect, Jai’iris D. Crawford, 18, of Englewood, inside the Chase Bank for attempting to pass a fraudulent check. Crawford is currently being processed and will be charged with attempted theft, passing a fraudulent check, and possession of a fraudulent credit card.
This incident is still under active investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the black BMW sport utility vehicle or of the attempted check-cashing scheme is urged to call the Tenafly Police Department Detective Bureau at (201) 568-5100.
