OFF TO THE RACES: Haworth 5K Expands In 10th Anniversary Year

A scene from the 2018 Haworth 5K. This year, the race’s 10th anniversary, organizers are expanding it to include a 10K, alongside the 5K and a color burst run. It’s set for Saturday, Sept. 21.

HAWORTH, N.J.—Haworth 5K organizers—the force behind that charitable race that’s donated nearly $250,000 to local causes—say they’ll mark the race’s 10th anniversary by expanding it to include a true 10K race.

With a dearth of 10k races in the fall, race organizers hope to further grow what they say has become one of the largest road race events in Northern New Jersey.

The race is set for Saturday, Sept. 21.

“Over the last decade the Haworth team has been able give [about $250,000] to both town organizations and charities ranging from the local library and parent teacher association to charities that support drug rehabilitation and care for the physically and emotionally challenged,” said the Haworth Road Runners, led by Dr. Jeff Pavell, Jackie Guenego, Jeannie Miller, Meryl Schreiber, Ed Koch and Heather Pavell.

The race has been a force for good in the community, bringing people together for a healthy day of community camaraderie, organizers say.

“And even if you don’t want to run or walk a 5K or 10K, there is the unique Haworth Color Burst that is less than one mile and has its own crisp white shirt that is the perfect template for the safe paint powder that is sprayed on the kids of all ages as they walk or run by the color stations,” said the Haworth Road Runners. New runners can pick up the healthy habit and long time runners can help contribute to all these charities by just signing up.
