Officers Could Not Stop Man Who Stepped Off Cliff

ALPINE, N.J.—On June 28, 2019 at about 9:09 a.m., officers of the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police were dispatched to a report of a suicidal person. The subject was located at one of the scenic overlooks along the cliffs of the Palisades Interstate Park in the Alpine section. 

The subject, a 55-year-old male resident of Lodi, was standing at the cliff’s edge. The subject abruptly stepped from the edge of the cliff as officers attempted to bring him to safety.

The officers immediately initiated rescue efforts and requested resources from the East Bergen Rappel Team, The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. The East Bergen Rappel Team located the victim at the base of the cliff. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. This incident is still under investigation.
