ORADELL, N.J. — The Oradell mayor and council recognized Police Officer Frank Stefano on April 28 for helping save the life of a man who collapsed during an adult hockey game at the Ice House in Hackensack.

Stefano, a four-year veteran of the department, was off duty and preparing to play in the game April 22 when a goalie suffered an apparent cardiac arrest, according to officials.

Police said Stefano, 32, immediately rushed to assist the man and began administering CPR while his wife, Catharine, called 911. According to an account released by the local PBA, Stefano also used an automated external defibrillator at the scene and delivered two shocks, helping restore the man’s heartbeat.

The unidentified man was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he is recovering, officials said.

Mayor James Koth praised Stefano’s response during the council meeting.

“Officer Stefano’s actions epitomize the dedication to 24-hour-a-day public safety that is the hallmark of our police officers,” Koth said. “People like him do not sit on the sidelines and wait for someone else to act. We are fortunate to have him on our police force.”

Police Chief David Gangemi also commended Stefano’s actions.

“I could not be prouder of Officer Stefano for taking action that saved a man’s life,” Gangemi said. “His actions are a tribute to his training as a police officer and his dedication to the community.”

Bergen County Commissioner Chairman Steven Tanelli also issued a certificate recognizing Stefano’s actions, calling his response an example of professionalism and preparedness in an emergency situation.
