WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — A former resident of Woodcliff Lake was among the 17 people killed Wednesday, Feb. 14, when a gunman went on a shooting spree at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Alyssa Alhadeff, 14, a freshman, previously lived in Woodcliff Lake from about 2010 to 2014 before moving to Florida, according to local officials and representatives from Valley Chabad, a local Jewish organization.
While friends in New Jersey mourned Alhadeff’s death, her mother, Lori, took to social media and television to express her grief. In a Facebook post, her mom wrote that Alyssa was a talented soccer player, smart and gifted creative writer, and had an amazing personality.
In a Cable News Network interview, she called for an end to gun violence.
“I just spent the last two hours putting the burial arrangements for my daughter’s funeral,” she said. “President Trump, please do something. Action! We need it now – these kids need safety now,” she pleaded.
Alhadeff was a former student at Dorchester Elementary School in Woodcliff Lake.
“The thoughts and prayers of our students, staff and community are with all those that have been affected by this terrible tragedy,” said Lauren Barbelet, Woodcliff Lake superintendent, in a statement. “A former Woodcliff Lake family is grieving at this time. We grieve with this family and offer our love and support.”
A funeral service for Alhadeff was held Friday, Feb. 16 at Star of David Funeral Chapel in North Lauderdale, Florida.
