PARK RIDGE—The Borough of Park Ridge Water Department on a sweltering June 21 announced temporary water rationing measures due to an extended period of dry weather. While the groundwater wells have an adequate supply, the department is struggling to pump water at the necessary rate to meet demand.

Effective immediately, the following water restrictions are in place:

Lawn Sprinkling Schedule:

  • Woodcliff Lake residents: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Park Ridge residents: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday

Exceptions:

  • New sod or seed may be watered daily for 45 days after planting.
  • Watering for two consecutive days is allowed after a commercial application of fertilizer, herbicide, or pesticide.

Permitted Uses:

  • Hand-held hose use for irrigation and vehicle washing is allowed daily, provided the hose has an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  • Washing of impervious surfaces is permitted if deemed necessary by the municipal or county health department to avert a public health threat.
  • Homeowners may use a bucket and sponge or a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle for washing buildings, decks, fences, lawn furniture, and windows.
  • Power washers can be used by homeowners only to prepare surfaces for painting, staining, or other treatments.

Commercial power washers may be hired for authorized home maintenance and cleaning, excluding the washing of pavement or other impervious surfaces.

The water restrictions will remain in effect until the three wells mentioned are fully operational. The department is hopeful that the restrictions will last only a few weeks and may be lifted sooner if there is significant rainfall.
