TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J.—An 80-year-old resident was knocked down and had his leg run over—twice—by a car driven by a Ho-Ho-Kus woman, 90, in the parking lot of Washington Town Center on April 2.

Police said the victim was rushed to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood with a likely compound fracture.

According to police, the victim was walking along a row of cars outside Foodtown when he was struck at approximately 12:15 p.m. A spokesman said the driver “apparently thought she had room to pass him.” Nevertheless, the woman knocked the pedestrian down and his leg went under the car’s front and rear tires on the passenger side.

The driver was issued a summons for careless driving, police said. The man’s condition was not released.

Neighboring Westwood has a Pedestrian Safety Task Force that’s been working to eliminate mishaps involving motorists and pedestrians/bicyclists.

In March, Emerson’s governing body approved a proposal by Councilwoman Jill McGuire to establish a task force of its own modeled on Westwood’s.
