context.

NORTHVALE, N.J.—On Aug. 31, the Northvale Police Department received a complaint of a possible theft. It was alleged that a suspect, after setting up an internet based charity fund for a local family, had absconded with the funds which totaled in excess of $9,000.

A representative from the victim’s family stated that multiple attempts to contact the suspect both telephonically and via attorney were ignored.

After further investigation, on Sept. 14, 2018, the Northvale Police Department charged Kellyann Carney, 43, of Northvale, with one count of misapplication of entrusted property, a crime of the third degree. As per New Jersey bail reform guidelines, the suspect was released on her own recognizance.

Northvale police initially declined to release the name of the suspect, but provided an arrest report for Carney in response to an Open Public Records Act request. Carney is identified in various online documents as the former president of the Northvale Parent Teacher Organization.
