POLICE BLOTTER: Bartender who drove car into bus charged with DWI

Cresskill, New Jersey—A 40-year-old borough resident who works as a bartender in Northvale was arrested for driving while intoxicated after he crashed has car into a bus, causing it to briefly ignite, on July 22 at 10:01 p.m.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a car crashed into a bus and was on fire. Officers arrived to find the vehicle was not on fire and all occupants were out of both vehicles. The crash occurred in the traffic circle around the Camp Merritt Memorial Monument.

The bus driver told police he had been parked when the car crashed into it. The bus driver had used a fire extinguisher on the car to put out the fire.

The bartender driving the car told police he had did not see the bus, which had no lights on, before he struck it.

Officers noted that the bartender’s eyes were bloodshot, watery and he had an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath. When asked, he told police he had one beer after work. He also told police he was supposed to wear glasses but was not.

Police initiated a series of standard field sobriety tests, and the bartender was arrested at the conclusion of the tests for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

At headquarters, the bartender registered a blood alcohol content of 0.16 on two breath samples—twice the legal limit. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving before being released to his wife at 12:20 a.m.
