TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J.—Officers confronted, and eventually contained, an emotionally disturbed man brandishing knives on the morning of Feb. 26.
According to Police Capt. John Calamari, officers received a call to a home on Linwood Avenue involving an emotionally disturbed person experiencing an episode.
When they responded, they spoke to the man’s relatives, and then they attempted to contact the person. Calamari said the suspect lunged at an officer while holding 6-inch knives in both hands.
Officers “retreated, obviously,” then regrouped and managed to disarm and subdue the man, who remained argumentative, Calamari said.
Two officers accompanied the man on his ambulance ride to New Bridge Medical Center for his evaluation.
Township police were joined in the incident by officers from Westwood, Ridgewood, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.
