Police Warn on Mailbox Theft Trend in County

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J.—The township police advise residents that mailbox thefts are on the rise throughout Bergen County, especially during the holiday season.

The police department urges all residents to be cautious when dropping mail, especially checks, in United States postal mailboxes.

It usually is a safe bet to drop your mail off in the postal mailboxes at the Township of Washington Post Office, in the rear of the Washington Town Center (261R Pascack Road), the department said on its website Nov. 30.

WTPD recommend these tips to prevent your mail being taken:

• Go inside the post office to drop off mail;

• Note collection times. Final pickups are typically around 5 p.m. After that, the mail isn’t picked up until the next business day;

• Try to avoid dropping mail off over holiday weekends or nights before holidays, when it may accumulate; and

• When writing a check, make sure to use a pen with pigmented ink, as this is more difficult to  alter and erase.
