HILLSDALE, N.J.—General Leonard E. Wood American Legion Post 162, serving Hillsdale, Woodcliff Lake and Old Tappan, will hold its first public POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 18 at noon at Veterans Memorial Park, near the new war monuments.
Past Post Commander Zoltán Horváth said the event will bring a ceremony conducted at the post’s regular meetings to a wider audience, honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action while recognizing the uncertainty their families endure.
“It is a poignant ceremony we perform at every one of our regular meetings and I thought it was high time that the public was reminded of its significance,” Horváth told Pascack Press.
The program will include a presentation and explanation of the Missing Man Table, accompanied by benedictions and moments of reverence.
Horváth said the POW/MIA flag is widely displayed, but he believes many people are unfamiliar with its significance.
“As a Viet Nam Veteran, I am intimately aware,” he said. “We should not forget.”
The public is invited to attend and pay tribute.
