Red Oak Falls in Storm, Takes Out Clark Field Fence

LEAVES OF GRASS: Strong gusts Sunday night took out a mature tree at Clark Field. No injuries were reported. John Snyder photo.

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J.—A mature red oak at Clark Field was no match for the strong wind gusts that swept over North Jersey on Sunday night, uprooting and crashing down through the chain link fence at Cleveland Avenue.

Police tape was seen wrapped around the tree’s upturned, fragrant root plate, and the area is unsafe. The ground had been softened by days of rain.

The winds were accompanied by thunderstorms in the area. Utilities said some 2,000 customers lost power in the state, and service flickered for many more. Many local residents saw flashes of light and heard a strange hum, and were speculating this morning about the cause.

We have reached out to officials for an update.
