Residents call for alternatives to cell tower at Stonybrook

HILLSDALE—Residents packed Borough Hall Jan. 20 to oppose a proposed 150-foot cell tower at Stonybrook Swim Club, urging Mayor Michael Sheinfield and council to explore alternatives before approving a lease.

Approximately 100 residents attended the two-hour town hall; at least 50 spoke. Many cited concerns about aesthetics, possible health impacts, and property values, while also acknowledging the need for reliable service for emergencies, including at Pascack Valley High School and during child pickup times.

Several residents urged smaller, less obtrusive options—such as pole-height facilities—or using existing infrastructure already serving other carriers. One suggested a planned tower at River Vale’s new Public Safety Complex as a potential alternative.

Borough Administrator Michael Ghassali said the council could consider authorizing the mayor to sign a lease Feb. 3 or Feb. 10, though a decision could be delayed until March as officials plan to question Verizon representatives. Verizon must also demonstrate to the Planning Board that Stonybrook is the best site.

No decisions were made. The next regular council meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.
