RIVER VALE POLICE BLOTTER: May 20, 2019

Random plate check finds $600 warrant unpaid

An officer conducting random license plate queries on Rivervale Road on May 6 at approximately 9:10 a.m. turned up a hit on a suspended registration.  

The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on Rivervale Road near Old Tappan Road. A computer check revealed that the driver had an outstanding warrant from Paterson for $600.

A backup officer arrived. The defendant, 27, from New Milford, was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters. 

There, he posted bail and was issued motor vehicle summonses for suspended registration and failure to exhibit an insurance card. 

He was released pending a court appearance at River Vale Municipal Court on May 21.

Registration was expired; marijuana odor was fresh

An officer on motor patrol May 6 at approximately 4:30 p.m. turned up a hit for an expired registration. He conducted a motor vehicle stop on Rivervale Road near Tiffany Avenue.

While speaking to the driver, the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A backup officer arrived on scene. 

The defendant, 28, from Midland Park, was read his rights and then voluntarily surrendered a container filled with marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. 

He was transported to police headquarters, processed, and issued a criminal complaint for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He also was issued a motor vehicle summons for expired registration. 

He was released pending an appearance in the River Vale Municipal Court on May 21.

Window tint can’t hide suspension, $500 warrant

An officer on motor patrol May 7 at approximately 8 a.m. saw a vehicle travelling on Rivervale Road with tinted windows.  The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on Rivervale Road near the Montvale border.  A computer check revealed that the driver’s license was suspended and the driver had an outstanding warrant from Garfield for $500.

A backup officer arrived and the driver, 44, from Edgewater was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters.  There, he posted bail and was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving with a suspended license and safety glass requirements. 

He was released pending an appearance in the River Vale Municipal Court on May 21.

Passenger was on a folding chair— marijuana involved

An officer on patrol May 7 at approximately 1:15 p.m. saw a vehicle travelling on Rivervale Road with a passenger seated on a folding chair between the two front seats. 

The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on Prospect Avenue. In speaking with the driver, he detected the odor of marijuana coming from within.

A backup officer arrived to assist. The car occupants were read their rights and questioned about the officers’ observations. A passenger admitted having marijuana in his possession and voluntarily surrendered it to police.

The passenger, 21, from Jersey City, was  arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he was processed and issued a criminal complaint for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released pending an appearance at the River Vale Municipal Court on May 21.

The driver of the vehicle was issued motor vehicle summonses for riding on parts not intended and failure to inspect. The summonses also are answerable in the River Vale Municipal court on May 21.

Putting the brakes on an outstanding $92 warrant

An officer on motor patrol  May 8 at approximately 4:20 p.m. observed a vehicle travelling on Rivervale Road with a malfunctioning brake light. The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on Westwood Avenue near Rivervale Road. 

A computer check revealed that the driver had a suspended driver’s license and an outstanding $92 warrant from Westwood.

A backup officer arrived. The defendant, 20, from Westwood, was  arrested. He was taken to police headquarters, where he posted bail. 

Issued motor vehicle summonses for driving with a suspended license and maintenance of lamps, he was released pending a May 21 appearance at River Vale Municipal Court.

Teaneck man, 21, has court date over drugs in car

An officer on patrol May 9 at  approximately 9 a.m. saw a vehicle travelling on Westwood Avenue with tinted front windows. The officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on Westwood Avenue.  While speaking with the driver, the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.  

A backup officer arrived to assist, and the driver, 21, from Teaneck, was read his rights. He admitted he had marijuana in the center console of the vehicle.  

Two grinders containing marijuana were retrieved from the vehicle. The defendant was arrested. He was transported to police headquarters and issued a criminal complaint for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

He also was issued a motor vehicle summons for possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. He was released pending an appearance in the River Vale Municipal court on May 21.
