Shotgun-wielding Westwood man charged after his ‘perimeter check’ draws SWAT

WESTWOOD—Brian McCarron, 52, of Fourth Avenue is released on bail pending a court date after he was taken into custody following a brief standoff with police.

McCarron is alleged to have pointed a shotgun in the direction of a passerby shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.

The alleged victim told police the defendant racked and pointed the firearm.

For his part, McCarron told police that he was conducting an armed “perimeter check” of his property, according to Police Chief Michael Pontillo.

Pontillo confirmed to Pascack Press on April 17 that responding officers surrounded the house after McCarron wouldn’t answer the door.

A Bergen County Regional SWAT team had arrived when McCarron emerged of his own volition just after midnight, Pontillo said.

Police seized two shotguns and ammunition. McCarron was charged with aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, two weapons possession counts, and disorderly conduct, Pontillo said.

The defendant was released under New Jersey’s bail reform law pending court action, Pontillo said.
